After a great tournament at Flowerbowl in Vancouver, we were looking forward to meeting our next competition at Summer Solstice, in Eugene, Oregon. But the tournament almost didn't happen for the two of us writing this post because after a late start in Toronto, Doh Doh called Air Canada to ask if our estimated arrival time to the airport would leave us enough time to catch our flight. The operator answered 'not likely.'
TC made the trek to the west coast for the first time this season to play in Flowerbowl. The weather was beautiful and so was our team. Unfortunately, not everyone could attend this weekend giving us a shortened roster of 17 players. After the long weekend training camp in Ottawa we knew our plan and had our goals in mind. The May long weekend has come and gone. Many people enjoy this weekend by going to cottages, camping or just having relaxing down time. To TC, this weekend meant other things, it meant all our team came together for the first time (7 players were sadly missed in TCTC#1) to learn our offensive and defensive strategies, to go over our goals as a team and to engage in some team bonding fun and shenanigans. From four provinces and seven cities we traveled by plane and car to our a Nation's Capital (yay!), for a 3 day training camp of focused and gritty ultimate. *Every two weeks our captains will provide a behind the scenes look at what they're working on
Kate, Kristin and I connect Vancouver and Ottawa by skype once a week to recap how things are going and what tasks we need to work on, delegate, or check off the list as complete. There was plenty to talk about today: - jerseys - accommodations in Japan - Vancouver tryouts (recap) - Ottawa tryouts (planning) and - season plan (schedule). I saved this one for last as a big chunk of our time is really focussed on putting together a plan for this summer that will provide TC with the right amount of games, practice time, and competition. Should be easy right? Not quite. Team Canada tryouts kicked off yesterday during a fantastic and sunny day in Vancouver, B.C. The ladies demonstrated their throwing & cutting skills, how they can break out of zones like pros and their timing and flow skills all over the field. We kept things fresh and scrimmaged with every number of team sizes possible - 4v4, 5v5, 6v6, 7v7 - we did them all! Layouts? Yes, those happened too! Don't forget hammers, scoobers, foot and handblocks. The ladies brought their best and weren't afraid to sky each other when the moment arose. During our lunch break, in true Canadian spirit, we cheered for the ladies trying out for Canada's U20 team heading to Ireland this summer.
Congrats to all those that came out yesterday. You kept the intensity up for four solid hours and demonstrated why Canada will be a force to reckon with this summer! A huge thanks to those that came out at the end of the day for a solid scrimmage to finish things off! Next stop: Ottawa March 31/April 1 As the first group of players trying out for Team Canada lace up their cleats in Vancouver today we couldn't think of a better day to launch the site. From the very start of the season, until the last point played in Japan - follow Team Canada's action here for updates, pictures, videos and more! Want to be even more connected to the action?
